Many people suffer from chronic fatigue and sleepiness, the result of not getting a good night's sleep. Most sleep problems are caused by difficulty breathing or abnormal breathing patterns related to obstruction of the airway. Sleep apnea is the most common sleep disorder, affecting more than 18 million Americans. This is a potentially life-threatening condition that causes a person to stop breathing, often many times, during sleep.

Instances of sleep apnea that occur when tissues in the throat collapse and block air flow in and out of the lungs are called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) results when the brain does not signal the body to breathe.

Symptoms of a sleep disorder may include:

       • Snoring

       • Forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating

       • Depression

       • Fatigue and daytime sleepiness

       • Morning headaches

       • Decreased sex drive

Sleep apnea is a serious disorder that, if left undiagnosed, could result in stroke, hypertension, increased risk of heart problems, as well as increased risk of accidents.

Duncan Regional Hospital's Sleep Center is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea and related ailments. Approximately 70-80 sleep studies are being performed here monthly. Patients spend the night in one of our comfortable, state-of-the-art rooms. A computerized sleep system monitors brain activity, airflow, breathing pattern, heart rate, oxygen saturation level, leg movement, chest and abdominal movement, and sleep positions.

Once a diagnosis is made, several treatment options are available. Patients can be fitted for use of a CPAP or referred for further treatment. Medicare and most private insurance carriers cover much of the cost of the sleep study and treatment.
