The Diabetics Self Management Training Programs at Duncan Regional Hospital can provide you with the keys to successfully manage your diabetes. Diabetic patients can receive in-depth education for patients living with diabetes on either an individual or group basis.
According to the American Diabetes Association, 200,000 Oklahomans have been diagnosed with diabetes. Even more alarming, there are approximately 100,000 Oklahomans who are unaware that they have diabetes.
Although diabetes is a life-long condition, it is controllable and you are in the drivers seat. The mission of the Diabetes Self-Management Program at Duncan Regional Hospital is to provide you with the keys necessary to effectively manage your diabetes for a lifetime.
Medicare covers 10 hours of Diabetes Self Management Education and 3 hours of Medical Nutrtion Therapy the intial year of education. Then Medicare covers 2 hours of Diabetes Self Management Education and 2 hours of Medical Nutrition Therapy each year there after. Most insurances cover the education the same way that Medicare covers.
Is the Diabetes Self Management Program right for you?
- You are a person newly diagnosed with diabetes
- You are someone who has had diabetes for some time, but never has had any formal education
- You are someone who has had diabetes for some time but are having difficulty controlling your blood sugar
- You are someone who has had diabetes education but needs a refresher and review.
- You have had a recent change in your diabetes management plan (change in medication or meal plan)
- You are a woman who has diabetes and are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
- You are a woman with gestational diabetes (diabetes that occurs only during pregnancy)
The Diabetes Self Management program requires referral through your physician.

Basic Self Management Training Program
This individualized program provides the participant with comprehensive instruction on meal planning, diabetes medications, exercise, self-blood glucose monitoring, preventing and/or delaying complications, and lifestyle changes that you can make for a healthier you. (This training is provided on an individual basis and/or group class setting depending on your needs.)
Insulin Training Program
The program provides the participant with the skills necessary to self-administer insulin, basic self-management tools, and teaches the participant the effects of insulin.
Intensive Treatment Program
This individualized program is designed for those clients who require knowledge of carbohydrate counting and/or require multiple daily injections of insulin.
Pregnancy and Diabetes Self-Management Training Program
This individualized program provides the participant with the skills necessary to perform self blood glucose monitoring, meal planning, and exercise guidelines for the person with Gestational Diabetes.
Training is offered individually and in a classroom or group setting. A family member or a friend is always encouraged to attend classes. Through the Diabetes Self Management Program your care and education will be coordinated with your physician and family members. Working together we will help you gain control and effectively manage your diabetes.
Professional Continous Glucose Monitoring
This is a procedure that allows for your physician to get a report on all your blood sugars for a 5-6 day period with readings every 5 minutes. This allows for your physician to determine any medication adjustments you might need to better control your blood sugars. This procedure is covered by most insurance companies if your A1C is greater than 7 or 8, or you are on insulin. We will verify if your insurance covers this procedure before scheduling you
Insulin Pump Ttraining (Medtronic)
We do initial insulin pump training and follow up insulin pump training and management.
Personal Continuous Glucose Monitoring Training (Medtronic)
We teach you how to use your personal continuous glucose monitor.
