More Cans less Cant’s
I have always had a stubborn streak. Especially when I am told I can't do something or I can't have something. That is why I have always had difficulty in following a diet. "Can't have this" or "Only eat this". The moment I am told I can't eat/drink something - I want it more than ever.
So when Dr. McGouran attended a DRH Foundation board meeting and told us about a diet he was on, I thought no way. His family was following the diet by Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn in his book Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease. At first all I heard was all the things I couldn't eat. No meat!? No olive oil!? No way!
But, he then shared how in just a few short months his cholesterol level dropped 30 points!
His cholesterol level went below 200! Now my ears perked up. My last cholesterol reading showed my level at 255. I have only been below 200 once in my life and that was at 198. Heart disease runs in my family as my dad died from a heart attack at the age of 38.
I thought I have to try this. I have to see if it would work for me. Using the diet created by Dr. Esselstyn's son, Rip, in his book Engine 2 Diet, I found myself doing a lot of "cants" - no meat, no oils, no dairy and a lot of "cans" - vegetables and fruits.
After two months I had my cholesterol level checked - 189! I was shocked - it works! And it wasn’t that difficult of a lifestyle change. I now have the incentive to continue eating this way. Do I have a few of the “can’t” items every now and then – sure. I just do better with the next meal.
Now only if someone would just tell me I can’t finish that 5K!
